Observation Saloon 1719 was built by the LNER at Doncaster in 1937. One of two such vehicles, the streamlined vehicle was used at the rear of the "Coronation" high speed service between London and Edinburgh, operated by LNER A4 locomotives. The original shape of the saloon gave rise to the nickname "Beaver Tail". At the end of each run the saloon was turned on a turntable, and was not normally connected behind the locomotive.
Both streamlined saloons ran for only 2 years in the high speed sets before war broke out and they were sent for storage. They never operated as a set again.
In 1948 some vehicles were used as general stock, whilst 1719 was occasionally used on charter trains until 1956, when both observation vehicles were transferred to the West Highland line. Here they were not turned at the end of each run, and travelled one way immediately behind the locomotive. Their original observation end restricted the available view and they were rebuilt with larger, more angular windows by BR at Cowlairs, Glasgow in 1959. They were repainted from aluminium/ silver into maroon at the same time.
1719 continued in use on the West Highland line until 1968 when it was retired. Saved from being dismantled, it was eventually passed to Railway Vehicle Preservations Limited who restored it between 2003 and 2007 to its 1959 condition.
