AUSTRAILIA 2010 Queensland

 

 

30th Sept Brian Irwin with John Rice of Ipswich Queensland A.U, I met John through the Letters in the Railway Modeler September 1997.

 

 

 

John Rice's layout is L.N.E.R and L.M.S Class A1 60143 Sir Walter Scot is under the ash plant.

 

 

City of Carlisle awaits at the station, she is in British Railway 1960s livery.

 

 

John took me to the Rosewood railway where the C17 was to work on the preserved line next day.

 

 

Scratched built Duchess by a British Railway Modeler of Austrailia.

 

ADELAIDE SOUTH AUSTRALIA

 

 

Mark Burchell left with myself in Adalaide, I met Mark in June 2001 in the U.K at Carlisle Station on a special train to The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway. Pic by Alan Strickland.

 

 

Mark & his brother Tony took me for a weekend in Quorn on the edge of the out back some 250 miles north of Adelaide.

2nd October 2010 Myself with Peter Stowell, or Puffin Pete, I first met Pete on the Puffing Billy in Oct 2008, I also met him at Carlisle Station U.K in April 2009. We were to meet again in Oz at the Maldon Railway & the Puffin Billy during my stay in October 2010. Its a small world.

 

 

4th Oct Port Augusta. 07.30 departure At Last I get my first look at the Ghan, Puffin Pete was catching the train back to Adelaide, then a flight to Melbourne then to Puffing Billy, he his the station master at Menzies Creek on the line.

 

 

4th Oct. Before returning to Adelaide we called at Peterborugh Musem.

 

 

4th Oct Its a busy day time for a rest on the loo of a diesel locomotive.

 MELBOURNE SOUTHERN CROSS & LINESIDE.

 

 

The comnuter units are very common and provide a half hourley service to the west outskirts of Melbourne.

 

 

 

It looks bran new yet it is a locomotive from the 1950s.

PUFFING BILLY

 

Puffing Billy is Victoria's favorite railway and is well known through out Australia.

 

 

One of the features of the railway is passengers riding with there legs out of the window.

 

 

 

 

 For old car lovers John owns a 1962 Jag which we travelled some 500 miles with no call outs.

 

 

 

John's house is a two story with a large garden 30 miles from Melbourne.

 

 

5ft 3 gauge K class no 163 in light steam she has just had a overhual and is been made ready for the summer season.

 

 

 

The one thing I wanted to see was the other Australia, Whahalla Mountain Rivers trail is 200 miles north of Melbourne.

A photo stop to look at a fallen tree, they are just left to rot away, the area is very vunerable to forest fire.

 ECHUCA PADDLE BOAT ON THE MURRY RIVER

 

 

It was still full steam ahead at a gentle pace on the Murry River.

 

 

 

 

The river was very full with all the winter rain so sterring & navagation was very important whatch out for the current in the water and other boats.

The special charter train was heanig for Melbourne, owing to a derailment it was to terminate at Albury, the bus to melbourne.

AUSTRAILIA 2010 Queensland

 

Just outside Ipswich station the turntable remains intact.

 

 

The old manual signal box also remains, all trains are controlled from a power box which I visited, pictures were no allowed.

 

 

John also has a collection of Modern image, the prototype Deltic of 1957 is on shed.

 

 

To the left a new pedestrian bridge with the old railway bridge right from the station leading to the rail museum.

 

 

 

A change of scene at Caloundra a getaway resort on the Sunshine Coast north of Brisbane.

 

 

ADELAIDE SOUTH AUSTRALIA

 

 

While in Adelaide I met up with Alan Strickland a former Carlisle railway entuhusiast, he lived Nr Upperby Sheds until he move to Australia in 1970. Alan is a proffessional writer, we are holding the Timeline Edition of our local paper the News & Star which Alan wrote about Upperby Sheds in the 1960s. Pic by Mark Burchell.

 

 

Port Augusta station, the standard gauge is to the left while the Pichi Richi 3ft 6 is to the right.The locomotive is heading a  special with army trucks and a host of passengers to Quarn which was the old Ghan railway. Link below for the railway

4th Oct We called in a toy museum and found a 0 gauge layout with tinplate locos.

 

 

4th Oct. On the way to Peterbourgh we came across an old abanoned station, note the blue sky and bright sunlight it was 32c.

 

 

10th Oct  My final day in Adelaide was a visit to the old trams they have at least 5 in operation which you can ride on all day long.

It is sad the staion only has one passenger train per day a Volocity two car unit arrives at Maryborough from Melbourne.
